Calling all Animal Lovers! Help Hillside Animal Sanctuary

Hillside Animal SanctuaryRecently Banana Moon have contributed to saving 3 beautiful Highland cattle from the food chain. Please follow the link to see more- http://www.banana-moon-clothing.co.uk/blog/william-hamish-and-dougal-reunited/

Hamish, Dougal and George are all now doing well in their refuge at the wonderful Hillside Farm Sanctuary in Norfolk which deserves everyone’s support.

The sanctuary was founded in 1995 to campaign and to help animals in need. Also most importantly to bring awareness to the millions of animals suffering in the intensive factory farming industry. It is now home to over 2,000 animals and its costs are growing by the day. Recent rescues have been a number of horses from a slaughter house in Cheshire , for example.

We are really sorry to hear that the Sanctuary is struggling for funding and Banana Moon have been called in to help, which we have done immediately. The wet winter has been the problem, and the fields  have become so waterlogged that hundreds of additional large bales of straw have had to be brought in. Also the cold weather has slowed down the new growth of grass in the fields.

Hillside needs all our help now !

Please go on the website and make a donation or buy an item from the shop. www.hillside.org.uk

Even a small donation of £4 can help and make all the difference and help to buy more straw. I wonder if some of our schools or colleges can look into ways they can raise funds for the Sanctuary, for example.

Maybe we can produce garments for fund raising, mainly some cheap printed t-shirts or even host a competition with a prize for the organisation who raises most money. Could you hold a fun run in your school perhaps?

What we do know is that Hillside Sanctuary need all our help now.  Banana Moon love our animals, it is a dog friendly work place (as we work alongside our in house greeters, Alfie and Fergus, daily) and here’s 2,000 plus animal’s in need of urgent help.

The sanctuary manager is Wendy Valentine and her telephone number is 01603-736200, if you want any more information.

Bradford City go to Wembley ….Again!!

Its very rare that Bradford City get to Wembley so when it actually happens twice in one season, everyone sits up and takes notice.

City have already reached the Carling Cup Final,  beating the likes of Watford, Wigan, Arsenal and Aston Villa along the way, it is an immense feat in their 64th game of the season to be at Wembley again for the Division 2 play off final on Saturday against Northampton town.

Talk of the City of Bradford being twinned with Wembley raised a titter in the office and so we produced this printed t-shirt, which we at Banana Moon  hope will amuse all.

Bradford City go to Wembley

Go Team Panda!

Race for LifeLike many women, I want to have the body of the likes of Jennifer Anniston and Mila Kunis, whilst at the same time, sitting at home on my sofa, eating chocolate. As we all know, that never works. For quite a while, I have needed the motivation to get up and get active, yet the thought of squeezing into a pair of Lycra jogging bottoms absolutely frightens the life out of me. A couple of week ago however, I finally got the motivation I needed to get going. Having had maybe a glass too many of wine, I was asked by 2 very good friends of mine, to join them in running (yes running), in this years Cancer Research Race For Life 5km. Instantly I agreed, forming Team Panda, only realizing the morning after exactly what I had committed to. Now 5km might not seem like a long distance to most people, but for a self-confessed couch potato like myself, it may as well be a 26 mile marathon. Not one to let my team down, that very morning I dusted off my old trainers and set off on what would be my first training session, with a little help from my encouraging husband and newly downloaded podcast- NHS Couch to 5k. Until 2 weeks ago, I had never heard of this. Basically, the free download includes various 30 minute training programmes, designed to increase your running ability from week to week, and get you running 5k in 9 weeks. I’ll admit, I was sceptical, however, after surviving the first “run”, I was hooked, if not extremely exhausted. Why not take a look at the link below to find out more about this NHS training programme.

http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/couch-to-5k-plan.aspx

Over the following days, Team Panda (don’t ask about the name… I have no idea) started accumulating sponsorship money, and after just a week, we had raised a fantastic £300. With each and every donation we receive, I get more and more motivated to train and in 2 month’s time, will definitely be running over the finish line with my friends Hannah and Emma.

I am on week 2 of my running schedule, and have to say, my breathing and pace is a little steadier. Maybe there is hope for me after all. I will keep you updated with my progress, and believe me when I say, if I can do it, anybody can.

Sew Much Fabric, Sew Little Time.

Singer Sewing MachineAs I write this blog it is a beautiful, bright & sunny Tuesday evening! Whilst I’m enjoying the sunshine – it may be brief – I’m also pining for the Tuesday 2 weeks ago when I immersed myself in the frenzied pattern cutting & garment assembly otherwise known as The Great British Sewing Bee final. This renewed interest in sewing really caught the imagination of the girls here in the Banana Moon office, although, as Sewing Bee showed, sewing is most definitely not exclusively a female activity.

It certainly seems that I am not alone in welcoming the resurgence of home sewing. Sales of sewing machines have increased by more than 30% over the past year, sewing groups or “cafes” are popping up countrywide & Nicola Horlick, the renowned city “superwoman”, is taking steps to persuade the government to return sewing to the school national curriculum, supporting the launch of a petition at  http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/british-government-put-sewing-back-on-the-national-curriculum.

Now, I don’t claim to be a highly skilled seamstress, but the skill I have, I can only improve upon. I yearn to be better than I am – I get by & really am quite capable but lack confidence if anything. I’d love to be taught how to sew. All I know, or think I know, I’ve taught myself, sewing wasn’t taught in my school. I recall my older siblings making an apron in their first term at secondary school, but just five years later, when it was my turn, sewing lesson were nothing more than a memory. Sewing courses in our local area are few & far between too.

Home Sewn BagHome Sewing BagHome Sewing BagI Believe sewing is a skill for life & can often be your only hope of producing a nativity costume with just 4 hours of panic to spare! Last Christmas, the big guy, with the red suit & the white beard, delivered a shiny, new sewing machine for my daughter. Her first project was a simple little tote bag for herself, which she has since replicated for a couple of friends.

Even more importantly, we spent quality time together, which is a rarity these days – she’s at that age! Sewing can, however, be as solitary or as sociable as you like. For some it’s just a solo activity, whereas, for many more, the support of like-minded people is preferred. The opportunities for sewing are endless, covering all ranges of ability. If your stitching is still a little wonky, you can produce a variety of soft furnishings which have a certain homespun charm. On the other hand, the more experienced stitchers can create exquisite haute couture garments with the finest, most delicate seams & hand beaded detailing.

For me, there is little more exciting than a shop filled with beautiful fabrics, ribbons & trimmings. I am constantly thinking of things I want to make, with fabric I just need to own. Trouble is I can’t decide where to start. First though, I’ll be signing the petition, with the hope of seeing a return to sewing in the classroom.

Best Foot Forward For National Walking Month

Walk To Work WeekThe month of May is National Walking Month!

Due to ‘modern life’, as a nation I feel we are now a lot less active than we used to be.  I remember that playing with my friends meant riding my bike round the block or going to the school field at the end of our road for a game of rounders, football or run outs! Now playing with friends’ means sitting in front of a television or playing a video game and with so much convenience food and fast food available we don’t move about as much or eat as well.  This is backed up by official government stats. I was astonished to learn that ‘In England 61.3% of adults and 30% of children aged between 2 and 15 are overweight or obese and are at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancers’. Source: Gov.uk

Walking is a great way to keep active and the benefits are endless!

Did you know…?  ‘Walking for just half an hour each morning can transform your fitness levels, reduce stress and vastly improve your concentration levels, giving you a clearer head and adding to better health.’ Source: Living Streets.org.uk

National Walking Month is a campaign to encourage walking and promote pedestrian safety on the streets of the UK. It was launched by the charity Living Streets and includes events such as ‘Walk to Work Week’ from 13-17th May, and ‘Walk to School Week’ from 20-24th May.  Through these events, they hope to show children and adults how easy, enjoyable and rewarding walking is and how it can lead to real changes in people’s habits and lifestyles.

Walk To Work Month 2013

Here at Banana Moon we are encouraging the staff where possible to leave their cars at home and walk to work or to have a wander on their lunch break.  Not only will it help us stay fit it and save us money it will reduce the carbon footprint on our planet. By doing this on a daily basis we could save ourselves on average £400 per year in petrol and reduce our emissions by approx. 86kg per annum. Get those legs moving guys!

I myself will be partaking in ‘Walk to School’ Week.  I love the walk to and from school with my boys, sadly I don’t do this as often as I like anymore! I am ashamed to say that I am a mum who’s children are part of the trend where walking to school is on the decline.  I will be making an extra special effort to leave my car at home and put on my walking shoes during this campaign.   The walk to school is not just about keeping us fit, it is also when I get to spend some quality time with them and find out so much about their lives, help them build independence, teach them road safety skills and build their social skills.

Banana Moon has some fantastic safety products and outerwear garments that can be personalised to keep you safe while out on our roads this May.  Whether you are just individuals, school clubs or part of a walking club we have bags, jackets and coats that will do the job to make you visible and stand out.

I urge you to get your best foot forward this May and get on your walking boots and as Nancy Sinatra sang in the last line of ‘These boots are made for walking’ …. Are you ready boots? Start walkin’!

World Fair Trade Day- 11th MAY 2013

World Fair Trade DayA few months ago it was ‘Fair Trade Fortnight’ and my eldest son came home from school with an interesting task set by his teacher for his weekend homework. This was to research all about Fair Trade, what it was, types of Fair Trade products and where they were made.  We trailed the supermarkets looking for various information and found lots of Fair Trade products around and gained lots of facts and fascinating material for him to do his show and tell in class. Not only did he learn a lot from this but so did I!

Working within the Textile industry there are many marks of standard and ethical policy which helps us (Banana Moon) as a clothing company and you the consumer, know that the garments and companies supplying our garments adhere to the highest possible trading conditions and respect the environment in which they are produced.  Examples of these are; The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), the Fair Labor Association (FLA) mark ,OEKO -Tex 100 Standard, Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) mark and of course Fair Trade. All of which Banana Moon use and as a responsible company, it is extremely important to us that the brands sourced have an approved ethical policy.

So what is Fair Trade…

“Fair Trade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Fair Trade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.” (Source: The Fair Trade Foundation)

On 11th of May it is ‘World Fair Trade Day’. It aims to promote global awareness of Fair Trade. It is always celebrated on the second Saturday of May each year. The event is endorsed by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO), a network of around 400 organisations from more than 70 countries. Unlike ‘ Fair Trade Fortnight’, which focuses on events taking place in the UK, the aim of the Fair Trade Day is to bring together people from all over the world in an international celebration of Fair Trade.

Take a look at two of our biggest Fair Trade Brands Premier and OKARMA which we supply and why not support ‘World Fair Trade Day’ this year. Find out more about where the products, and in particular clothes you wear come from.  By doing this it will give you a much better understanding of what Fair Trade is all about and you may even learn something!

Good artists copy, Great artists steal

Having recently come into possession of the awesome “Factory Records – Communications 1978-92″ cd box set I’ve been enjoying looking back at all the great bands and music that made the record label what it was… one of the most creative, revolutionary and highly amusing labels of the time which in my opinion was only really rivalled by the mighty but short lived Stiff Records. There’s so much to talk about when discussing Factory but I’m sure you all know the stories so I won’t go into it here. If you don’t know what I’m talking about I insist you Google it immediately or maybe just watch the amazing 24 hour party people film starring Steve Coogan.

The cover of the box set features the iconic Peter Saville creation “Use hearing protection” which fitted in perfectly with the image of the Factory owned hacienda club with its fresh New York inspired look, colours, feel and loud music.

The image itself or so the rumor goes was spotted by Peter Saville on a building site and was designed to draw the workers attention to the importance of wearing ear protection while using loud machinery.

Impressed by the simplicity of it Peter simply (ahem) borrowed it, altered it slightly and used the sign on promotional Hacienda flyers where it immediately became recognised as one of his many “iconic” icons associated so strongly with the clubs branding.

It really is such a simple but effective idea to take a well known image that everybody recognises (in the above case if you’re a construction worker) and place it in a different environment to give it a new meaning that works so well.

This idea can also be used by yourselves when creating personalised hoodies or t-shirt prints, especially for stag do’s and such like.

When ordering at Banana Moon many people just ask for plain text (eg. bobs stag do 2013) but without much effort you can easily turn a plain t-shirt into your own inspired masterpiece just by adding a familiar image and maybe adding a funny one liner to it.

Peter Saville 'Use Hearing Protection' Image Banana Moon

As I said before Peter Saville did alter the image to make it his own and I’m sure neither Peter or I wish to condone any copyright infringement here but have a good look around the internet and see what you can find to make your print a bit more interesting.

If you don’t feel comfortable (ahem) borrowing other people’s artwork please take comfort in the words of another great artist of our time…

Good artists copy, Great artists steal
Pablo Picasso

What Picasso meant by this is a good artist can copy a famous piece of artwork and show great skill while doing it but if you steal the idea and make it your own by improving it you are truly a great artist indeed, as illustrated here by Marcel Duchamps magnificent moustache masterpiece L.H.O.O.Q.

Who can argue with masters like these!

FOOTBALL NOT JUST A GAME, A WAY OF LIFE!

FOOTBALL NOT JUST A GAME, A WAY OF LIFEFor those of you who know me well, you will be well aware that I and all the members of my family are massive football fans.  For as long as I can remember weekends from August- May have been taken up with watching the “beautiful game”, whether it be on a touchline watching my brother or cousin play for our local little league team, on the terraces or on the television.  My wedding was even strategically planned so that it didn’t clash with World or European cup games or during a football season!

On my side of the family we are all Crystal Palace Fans,( well except my Dad who supports  any South London Club that’s winning! ) and on my husband’s side they are huge Bradford City supporters.

This week is very important in the Rich/Flyde household! Both of our teams are currently in a play off place to be promoted to either the Premiership or Division One.  We will go through every emotion watching our beloved teams, who over 2 games they will fight for promotion and try to make it to Wembley, to try win the ultimate prize of winning the play off final. In the end it could be complete jubilation or total devastation  Lets hope its not the latter!

In February this year, my family and I got the chance to see Bradford City at Wembley as they defeated Premier League opposition to reach the Capital One Cup Final against Swansea City. It was a magical day, with a fabulous atmosphere (just a shame about the 5-0 defeat!). As a memento to remember our trip I organised for Banana Moon to make us to have some ‘Cup Final’ Hoodies,Sweatshirts, T-Shirts and Polo’s.

We bought each of the boys the great quality 599B Childrens Hardwearing Polycotton Polo and a  FH004 Junior Hoodie, which kept them warm and cosy on a very cold and bitter day. For us Adults we had the FH001 Original Hoodie (which is my favourite hoodie) and the 599M Hard Wearing Polycotton Polo. For our more senior party members we have got the GD56 Adult Crew Neck Sweatshirt and for myself the BA190F Ladies Exact 190 T-Shirt. We personalised these with an Embroidered Logo on the Left Breast and some Embroidered  text below. These are now worn non stop and they are loved by all of the family from 4 to 60+.

If you are having a major sporting event in your life such as a Football Tour, Rugby Tour, Trip to the races, Sailing Event or whatever sport it maybe, a personalised garment is a great idea as a memento  to give to members so they can recall the memories gained from the trip every time it is worn.

With such big football matches ahead for Crystal Palace and Bradford City all I can do is cross my fingers and hope for the best. Better still, have a bottle of champagne on ice or a box of tissues to hand. Whatever happens over the next few weeks football has always been, and will always be a way of life… there’s always next season!

Ethical Policies

WRAP ethical policy used on Banana Moon BandsAfter the terrible disaster in the Bangladesh textile factory last week, a new focus is about to fall on the worldwide textile industry, and its ability to improve conditions for its workers.

I was reading that its workers earn 40 dollars per month on average. Of course there was the terrible fire in the factory at Tazreen Fashions last November as well.

Its not the first disaster and it may not be the last as long as western consumers are happy to pay as little as possible  for t-shirts and clothing. I guess the problem is that if we pay more it still doesn’t always go towards safety and better conditions and better pay but further lines the pockets of unscrupulous entrepreneurs. Maybe the only answer is for closer inspection of premises by western retailers and buyers.

A high percentage of Banana Moons garments are from WRAP approved factories supplied by top brands in the Far East. Brands such as Awdis who supply the famous college -JH001 and varsity- JH003 hoodies use only WRAP approved factories as indeed does anything produced by our own label hoodies.

WRAP is worldwide responsible accredited production. It is the worlds largest facility certification programme mainly focused on the apparel, footwear and sewn products sectors. Its principles include no child labour, prohibition of abuse or harassment, limited hours of work , and no discrimination, and stringent environmental and health and safety standards.

Every brand we use has to have an approved ethical policy. What we would like to see in the future is all brands in the promotional industry go over to WRAP approved factories even if it does cost more. That way, disasters like the ones mentioned earlier will become a thing of the past , hopefully.

Time Flies When You’re an Apprentice

Banana Moon's apprentices for National Apprenticeship week

Our design apprentice Beth Clark talks us through what it’s been like during her first year of being an apprentice at Banana Moon:

This past year has flown by and it only seems like yesterday when I started at banana moon. Once I saw the position online for the manufacturing apprenticeship I knew I had to apply! I have always been interested in the textiles and fashion industry ever since I completed GCSE and AS Level Textiles.

Banana Moon’s unique name drew me in and made me curious to find out more about the company, so I went onto their website and looked into the ‘about us page’ which told me exactly what banana moon is – a friendly, family run business and yes they are definitely my second family, I feel at home coming to work especially with the welcomes from Alfie and Fergus.

I have enjoyed every second of my apprenticeship and working at banana moon. I have been learning from my colleagues and now I have experience of computer design, printing and embroidery.

I never considered starting an apprenticeship before Banana Moon but I’m so glad I did now. It gives you the opportunity to earn while you learn, gain a nationally recognised qualification and improve your skills and knowledge with hands-on experience in a real business environment.

It has opened up many opportunities for me to take part in a lot of different events for example National Apprenticeship Week which highlights the importance of workplace training and to encourage more people to consider this path to employment. This ties in with the campaign ‘Made by apprentices’.  This was launched to showcase the creative talents of apprentices and their contribution to some of the country’s exports, goods and services. In fact I actually made it on to the Prime Minister’s Pinterest page along with my fellow apprentices .

By completing my coursework and qualification I have been lucky enough to be given a permanent contract with Banana Moon at the end of the 12 month course. I would definitely encourage more young people to consider an apprenticeship to kick-start their career and future.
